Facebook has decided to aggressively expand its “Deals” services to compete directly with Groupon and LivingSocial. The new social service will provide local discounts to Facebook users in their cities similar to the deal of the day.
The new service rolls out in five test markets including Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, and San Francisco. And lets users locate deals on on a page with local promotions. It also shows deals and promotions on the left side of the home page with the feeds. According to Facebook, it will let people buy deals on Facebook and share them with their friends.
The push into social deals, will no doubt increase the pressure on Groupon and LivingSocial which have experienced rapid growth in the deal of the day market space.
Local advertising markets is an area of growing interest for targeting certain segments so the move is a great strategy for the site, specially considering Facebook’s detailed database of user’s interests.
