XXX Porn Domains Get ICANN Approval

xxx 01 300x300 XXX Porn Domains Get ICANN Approvalxxx 02 300x300 XXX Porn Domains Get ICANN ApprovalAccording to Techie Buzz, ICANN(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has approved the .xxx domain extension in a vote, as a top level domain. This would make all pornographic websites register with the .xxx rather than the usual .com. Many companies in the porn industry are not happy with this decision because they believe this change seeks to victimize them. In a recent protest, 24 people showed up in opposition to the passing of the domain during ICANN’s San Francisco. One of the arguments made against the .xxx passing is that this would encourage censorship. Kink.com reports that moving to .xxx domains will cost them up to $100K per year.

It is interesting to note that in 2007, the board voted against the .XXX domain, which was later overturned by an independent review panel. Back then, one board member had said that .XXX would encourage filtering, thus encouraging censorship. The board had also noted that they could not reach an agreement with the GAC(Governmental Advisory Committee) which represents the governments of the world. Since then, the Governmental Advisory Committee has chosen to get more involved with ICANN’s pursuits, thus bringing us to our current predicament.
