Viewdle Face Recognition App Knows Who You Are
Google may be coming out with a face recognition app soon but Viewdle has already beat them to it. You probably have not heard of Viewdle, yes they are relatively new, but they raised funding last year and now has several products in the works, one of which is a face recognition app. The app allows you to instantly identify people by taking their picture and its making the headlines.
As you would imagine face recognition technology is in high demand but the technology itself is not new. Viewdle was founded in 2006 and started as an ex-military lab project in the Ukraine, however, the technology is now commercially available. While there are many companies doing similar apps, the difference with Viewdle is that they claim its technology is capable of real-time visual analysis, essentially capable of automatically identifying faces at the moment the image is captured.
Laurent Gil, the founder of Viewdle, claims that even with small processors found on mobile phones, their technology can recognize a face in 300ms. And capable of creating links to your friends and family so its social by design, integrating with social media. Essentially the technology tags, routes and shares photos instantly – it’s a social photo messaging tool.
Viewdle’s potential is in licensing its technology to media companies looking for an automated way to identify and tag content. The company is building a model that allows users to access their friends list and auto tag photos from their desktop by connecting to Facebook.
The issue for the company may come in terms of privacy and how it handles people’s concerns. With this technology, it would be easy to obtain a photo and pull someone’s information instantly so it will no doubt spark debate about how much information should be shared.
