Adobe CS5.5: Pay As You Go Plan
With Adobe’s recent announcement of the company’s Creative Suite release, we see that they are taking a “portable direction”, tailoring their software for mobile devices. The current edition of Creative Suite sells between $1300 and $2600 and includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Acrobat, and Dreamweaver. Of course, these are programs used to create and modify photos, flash video, website content, and documents.
Adobe is also lengthening the time of their release cycles from 18 months to two years. The new software will include a development kit that will allow for faster migration from existing applications to mobile gadgets. The new software will also enable visualization on different devices before publication and offer tools to tweak the aesthetics of each product. Adobe expects over 131 million smartphones to have Adobe’s Flash Player installed by the end of this year.
The company also promises improved video capabilities, and improved features in the Dreamweaver Web design product for the HTML5 standard. An interesting new service Adobe will have will be a subscription edition that will allow developers to pay a monthly fee between $35 and $95 to use Adobe software. While I think that this is a cool service to offer for developers who may not see the immediate payoff of spending $500+ on software, I wish that part of the “software rental fee” could be applied to purchase a full copy. Hopefully this will be something that can be tweaked in the future. This should definitely be exciting news for design aspirants who want and need Adobe software for professional and personal needs.
