Netflix Embedded In Google Chrome OS (Leaked News)
For those of you who aren’t already aware, Google is launching an operating system later this year dubbed Chrome OS. Essentially, it is a lightweight operating system that is designed around Google’s current Chrome web browser. Currently, there is no support for Netflix because it requires the Microsoft Silverlight plugin, a plugin that only runs on Windows and OS X.
There is however, an open source implementation of Silverlight (known as Moonlight), but unfortunately, Moonlight does not support Netflix and Chrome doesn’t support Moonlight. The whole situation is a bit of a mess, but the team at The Chrome Story have recently found some Chrome OS code reviews that suggest an official Netflix plugin for the Chrome operating system is being made. Since this is an information leak, it has not yet been confirmed by Google nor Netflix, but it seems that the Netflix friendly OS is already being tested on a few devices, although not on the Google Cr-48 laptop.
If the Chrome OS really does get a Netflix plugin embedded in its operating system that will mean any Chrome OS laptop can stream Netflix movies and shows immediately to their laptop without needed to download and install Microsoft’s Silverlight. While this only really affects new computers, it’s always nice to know that our workload as a consumer is being lightened. Call me lazy, but I enjoy having my plugins pre-installed.
