Facebook For 5 Year Olds?
We recently wrote about Facebook having over 7 million users under the age of 13. Obviously this is a problem when you have such young children on the Internet providing many details about themselves. Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg recently stated that he believes children should be educated about Facebook at a really young age so the social media platform doesn’t hit them like a sack of bricks as soon as they turn 13.
I agree with Zuckerberg, and I find the same holds true for many things. New responsibilities should gradually be introduced to individuals rather than being slammed with them. Let’s say a boy turns 13 and immediately starts a Facebook account without knowing exactly who has access to his information or the dangers involved with posting personal information on the Internet.
Zuckerberg wants children under 13 to be exposed to Facebook but with much more limited freedoms than someone who signs up as a 13 year old. Zuckerberg also notes that it is easy for underage children to lie and sign up as a 13 year old. Since underage kids are likely to do it anyways, might as well do it the right way and educate them properly about the safety and dangers of the Internet. Read more about it here.
