Samsung Rolls Out Dual-Platter 1TB HDD
Samsung has recently introduced a new 1TB hard drive in a 2.5″ form-factor. Now, there are already quite a few of these capacity hard drives in a similar form factor, but Samsung is the first to do it a 9mm, as opposed to the usual 12.5mm design.
The extra-thin hard drive platters allow for a more efficient two platter design instead of 3, allowing Samsung to do more with less space. If the computer manufacturer decided to go with a larger hard drive, it could have enabled a much larger capacity on the drive.
What does this mean for future hard drives? How about 4TB or 5TB of space on a single drive? While this wouldn’t be practical for most consumers, I could see how it would come in handy for businesses needed to store a large amount of data.
This drive, however, only features 1TV and goes by the name Spinpoint M8. The Spinpoint M8 is set to launch in a few weeks and will be priced at a very reasonable $129 for a full terabyte of space, making it the ideal upgrade for any laptop. See the video below for an alternate take on storage space, although, much more expensive than traditional hard drives.
