Nokia Takes Down Apple In Patent Case
Nokia has announced today that Apple has agreed to pay them a one-time settlement and continuous license fees for Nokia-owned patents, which ends a long-standing battle that Apple had started back in 2009. Both companies have also agreed to retract prior complains from the U.S. International Trade Commission.
The CEO of Nokia stated, “We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licenses…This settlement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”
This recent victory for Nokia will likely improve its profits for the following quarter as well as improve the chances of selling Nokia Windows phones. Apple is probably crossing its fingers for the company is still going through legal battles with HTC and Samsung.
I still do not have much faith in either Nokia or Windows Phone 7 as they both have a track record for failure (Symbian, Vista, and Xbox360’s RRoD). We will see if Windows 8 is any different on the mobile platform, and if Windows Phone 7 holds out to be a solid build. Let us know some of your thoughts on either mobile platform.
