Solar Powered NC215 Netbook From Samsung: $399
Wow, a solar powered netbook. I never thought I’d be hearing those terms in the same sentence, and especially not as soon as now, but it’s true folks. Samsung will soon release a 10.1″ netbook with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and a nice matte finish.
Hardware wise, there’s nothing too special about this new machine (pictured top) and it includes the often cited Intel Atom N570 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 250GB hard drive.
But the fact that it is solar powered should get folks happy, especially those who aren’t blessed to be around wall outlets all day long.
Equipped with the basics, the netbook has WiFi, Bluetooth, and a LAN port, and it ships with Windows 7 Starter. The netbook is priced at a reasonable $400 but we don’t have any information on battery life or how much juice you can expect to get from the solar panels.
I’d think an increase of 30-40% would be good enough for the average consumer though, and the netbook just went up on Amazon for pre-order.
Another concern I have is people cooking their netbooks out in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. I can’t imagine that being good for the computer, especially if done on a regular basis. Not to mention people letting their solar powered laptops sit on the passenger’s seat in clear view of any passers by. What do you guys think?
