Caloric Calculator Apps Require FDA Approval

Well, it looks like the Food and Drug Administration is finally stepping up to the plate when it comes to all those caloric calculator apps you see for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7.

The proposal will grant the FDA oversight on mobile medical apps for tablets and smartphones. Now, just to be clear on which Caloric calculators will be regulated, it will be the ones that are combined with sensors- turning a basic iPhone into an ECG unit.

HP Bringing NFC To Phones And Tablets This Year

Hewlett-Packard said that it is considering implementing NFC technology (Near Field Communications) in its mobile handsets, and aims to bring the NFC phones to the U.S. market by the end of this year.

Bloomberg reports that two people familiar with the company’s direction have stated that HP will not only introduce NFC technology to its phones, but tablet PCs as well. Although this isn’t ground-breaking news that a large manufacturer like HP is adopting a soon-to-be trendy technology, it does offer us a time table of when we can expect major companies to jump on board with NFC.

Advertising Startup, TellApart, Raises $13M Funding

An advertising startup that uses a pay-for-performance model, called TellApart, announced today that is has successfully raised $13 million in Series B funding led by Bain Capital, which brought the total amount raised to nearly $18 million.

The company was founded by two former Google product engineers, Josh McFarland and Mark Ayzenshtat. TellApart assigns a Customer Quality Score to each individual customer, based on the customer’s onsite behavior patterns (products viewed, items purchased, etc.). The data is then compiled into a CQScore that distinguishes high value customers from ordinary customers, hence the name, TellApart.

Indian-based Search Engine Raises $10 Million

An Indian-based search engine called Just Dial has just raised $10 million in funding from SAP Ventures and Sequoia Capital. The company was started in 1996 in Mumbai and allows consumers to search for local business through the Internet, phone, WAP, and through text messages.

Using the service, consumers are able to discover new restaurants, retail outlets, or search for plumbers or exterminators. It’s basically an easier-to-use form of the YellowPages in the United States. The service is now used by 57 million unique users spread over 250 Indian towns and cities.

Yelp, Should You Follow It?

Duncan Simester posted an interesting blog from the Harvard Business Review. Simester mentions a restaurant he created six years ago with two partners, a restaurant meant to be a grab-and-go food business for more expensive clients. Simester claims that Yelp started around the same time and while he originally saw the newly found website as a blessing (being able to receive feedback and improve), he noticed that some of the comments were quite harsh.
