The Cyber War, 24,000 Files Stolen From Dept Of Defense!

A top Pentagon official said that an overseas intelligence agency stole 24,000 computer files in March from a defense contractor developing systems for the US military.

The Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn claimed that it was significant. It would help the DoD( Department of Defense ) to cover up the weak spots and make the system more immune to such further attacks

Regulators Request Banks To Improve Network Security

US financial regulators have asked that all banks do their best to boost network security after companies have gone through a flurry of cyber attacks. The Federal Financial Institutions Council recommended that banks perform regular risk assessments as well as keeping customers informed about any online banking security issues.

The Council urged that all banks demand more than one form of customer authentication since hacking often occurs via keyloggers, where passwords are stolen on personal computers.

GeoHotz Found A Job At Facebook

It looks like Zuckerberg saw something in well known hacker, George Hotz (GeoHotz) after Hotz hacked the Sony Playstation 3 and got considerable attention from Sony. It wasn’t long though, until Sony dropped the case when they realized Hotz had a secret network of alliances, then known as the anonymous hacking group (and later redubbed Lulz Security).

George Hotz started working for Facebook in May when he was offered a job, but had not publicly announced it until June 17th. His Facebook profile is further confirmation that he is not joking.

LulzSec Calls It Quits, Posts Official Letter Of ‘Resignation’

Well shoot, that was fast! The hacking group, Lulzsec has apparently decided to call it quits, assuming the pastebin document below is indeed from the group and is not, itself, a hoax.

So that leaves me guessing three things. A) LulzSec finally decided to quit, B) they were threatened to be exposed by other hacking groups, or C) it is a hoax! Before the official let go, the hackers posted the rest of the information they stole through previous hacks online.

Google Health And Google PowerMeter Both Perish

Google will discontinue two of its products, Google Health and Google PowerMeter, since neither platform every really took off. Google Health was launched in May 2008 and was intended to be a service that catered to health and wellness as an information resource.

Users were also able to import their medical records, lab results, prescription information, and immunization histories to google.com/health under an individual account.

U.S. Invests In Smart Grid Tech + Security

According to eWeek, The United States government has recently came forth with a series of initiatives to implement information technology to the national power grid to make it “smarter”, more efficient, and secure. The council of National Science Technology outlined plans to create a smart grid innovation hub, in a report released yesterday called “Building the 21st Century Grid.”

The innovation hub will be composed of federal researchers, companies, and utility executives and will support research, development, and deployments of smart grid technology.
