Japan Raises Penalty For Distribution Of Viruses

Japan’s parliament has just enacted a legislation that criminalizes the creation or distribution of computer viruses, in attempts to make the Internet a safe place. The Japanese Government seeks to support the Convention of Cybercrime, a treaty that was ratified by 31 countries that proposes international cooperation in investigating crimes in cyberspace.

The new legislation makes the creation or distribution of a computer virus punishable by up to 3 years or 500,000 yen in fines.

New Airport Security Checkpoint Of The Future

The International Air Transport Association came forth with a mock up of a future security checkpoint system. Rather than removing your belts and shoes, and have TSA officials give you the royal treatment, passengers will simply walk through the machine and will receive a full body scan as they walk through the hall-like sensor.

Passengers will be sorted according to risk, and those who fly frequently will be automatically deemed less risky. No clue on whether racial profiling will play into who gets chosen for the high-risk passengers (those who pose a threat), but supposedly the system takes in a wide variety of factors when deciding.

Indian-based Search Engine Raises $10 Million

An Indian-based search engine called Just Dial has just raised $10 million in funding from SAP Ventures and Sequoia Capital. The company was started in 1996 in Mumbai and allows consumers to search for local business through the Internet, phone, WAP, and through text messages.

Using the service, consumers are able to discover new restaurants, retail outlets, or search for plumbers or exterminators. It’s basically an easier-to-use form of the YellowPages in the United States. The service is now used by 57 million unique users spread over 250 Indian towns and cities.

Japan’s Tech Sector Slams Brakes On Production

The recent Japanese earthquakes that have been slamming the country have caused some major issues with power usage. Sony is considering shutting down some of its facilities in Japan, due to the damaged nuclear and thermal power stations. The Japanese Government has asked manufacturers to conserve power whenever possible by lowering energy consumption.
