Facebook’s Unique Visitors Fall in May

Facebook’s U.S. user numbers fell in May from April and March, according to data compiled by research firm comScore, in the latest sign that the No.1 social network’s growth may be leveling off.

Last month, Facebook attracted 158.01 million unique visitors in the United States, slipping from 158.69 million in April and 158.93 million in March, comScore said.

Facebook Set For $1 Billion In Social Gaming Revenue

Facebook Inc is on course to generate $1 billion in revenue this year from social gaming, according to Kevin Ryan, a leading Internet entrepreneur and former chief executive of online advertising giant DoubleClick.

Most of that revenue will come from advertising.”The $1 billion forecast also includes revenue from Facebook Credits, which allow users to buy items for games and other activities on the social network” , he added.

Foursquare Hits 10 Million Users

LinkedIn India wasn’t the only group celebrating 10 million users. Foursquare also hit a 10 million user base on the same day. Whoa, talk about a coincidence. Foursquare celebrated by creating an interactive map, showing a series of colorful dots that had slowly spread around the globe.

Each one of those dots represented a user and the growth of the company, which has just passed its second birthday. Okay, so you may be thinking, who celebrates a 10 million user-base with a silly map?

The application pulls the best daily deals from websites like Living Social and streamlines it to your custom interests and demographic.

The Groupon-style apps are quite hot these days, with people looking for the best bargains around town, especially in the recession we are in. T-Mobile is the first wireless carrier to offer such an app.

Best Buy Furious At Newegg’s Marketing

Best Buy recently sent online electronics manufacturer, Newegg, a cease and desist letter, citing that Newegg stole Best Buy’s Geek Squad logo and made of Best Buy in a commercial (shown top). If you ask me, a power button symbol as an O isn’t clever enough to be trademarked by anyone.

Not to mention that Best Buy’s logo has a tie on its power button and Newegg doesn’t. As for the commercial, I agree that Newegg was probably making fun of Best Buy employees in a generic sort of way, but this kind of stuff happens ALL the time with competitors. Hello? Ever heard of the “Mac vs. PC” campaign Apple spun way back when? Did Microsoft cry about it? No. They countered the ads showing a racially and socioeconomically diverse group, all claiming that they were a PC.

eBay Acquires E-commerce Startup, Magento

eBay announced on Monday that it has agreed to overtake Magento (an open source ecommerce platform), an LA-based company with nearly 300 employees. eBay before only had a minority stake in the company, but has since then decided to go big or go home. Neither company stated how much the deal will go for, but it is expected to close in the third quarter of this year upon approval.

Magento offers tens of thousands of merchants control over the user experience, catalog, content, and functionality of their online store. The company’s “Go” platform offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS), offering both small and growing merchants the online tools they need, from payments to inventory management.

Indian-based Search Engine Raises $10 Million

An Indian-based search engine called Just Dial has just raised $10 million in funding from SAP Ventures and Sequoia Capital. The company was started in 1996 in Mumbai and allows consumers to search for local business through the Internet, phone, WAP, and through text messages.

Using the service, consumers are able to discover new restaurants, retail outlets, or search for plumbers or exterminators. It’s basically an easier-to-use form of the YellowPages in the United States. The service is now used by 57 million unique users spread over 250 Indian towns and cities.

France Bans Words, ‘Twitter’ And ‘Facebook’ From TV/Radio

France has, and continues to ban the names of both social networking sites from being spoken on radio or television, unless of course, the terms are part of a news story. Before you go crazy, the reasoning isn’t quite as absurd as our use of “Freedom Fries.”

The ban dates back to a 1992 decree (law issued by head of state) that claims the mentioning of such names as an act of advertising. France believes that saying “Facebook” or “Twitter” is preferential toward successful social networking sites, and takes the spotlight from other lesser known social networking sites.

Google Acquires RSS Startup, PostRank

Google acquired PostRank yesterday. Postrank is an RSS startup, and the move proves to be a continuation of Google’s strategy to go social. PostRank basically lets users plug into any RSS feed for analysis. The system ranks feeds by the number of comments, inbound links, Twitter shares, Facebook shares, and other social cues.

Analysts are guessing that the PostRank technology will be implemented into Google Analytics, but it is unsure what exactly Google plans to do with the recent buy.

Sprint Offering $175 If You Switch Over

Sprint is now offering customers from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon, $175 of store-credit to *business users who switch over to Sprint service and buy any Sprint phone. The credit was designed to “give customers a chance to try Sprint without having to worry about fees or charges for terminating their contracts with current carriers.”

This makes a lot of sense since most termination fees are close to $200 with wireless providers. This is also the perfect opportunity to those upset with either T-Mobile or AT&T. The $175 is given to those looking to buy a smartphone and a $50 credit is given to those looking to buy a low-end feature phone. Individual users will only get a $125 credit towards the purchase of a smartphone.
