New CAM Storage Is Much Faster Than Any SSD

Before solid-state drives came around, data storage on PCs happened at a relatively slow pace using traditional hard disk drives which utilize a spinning disk between 3,800 RPM (less common) to 7,200 RPM (more common). Although solid state technology is faster and more reliable than hard drives, it’s still nothing compared to the speed of RAM (Random Access Memory).

With this in mind, NEC developed a new Content Addressable Memory (CAM) system that stores data without using any power. The new CAM modules are as fast as RAM modules, making it a top contender for future technology around the globe.

Samsung Introduces First 30nm DDR3 RAM

Samsung today announced a new 30nm DDR3 RAM module, coming in 2GB and 4GB sticks that are designed to keep power consumption low, about 66% more power efficient than a regular chip, in fact. The chip still hits a 1.6Mbps peak bandwidth.

The most optimal use of these new RAM modules would be laptops and netbooks that require less memory and a low power draw, thus enhancing overall battery life. The memory modules will be available in both single and twin packs depending on your needs.

Sony Has Created Ultra-Fast Memory Stick

Sony Europe has just announced a new high speed flash memory stick called the PRO-HG Duo HX. Sony claims that this new memory stick is capable of reading data transfer speeds of up to 50MB/s, making it 1.6x faster than current memory stick modules and faster than any commercially available UHS-I SD card.

We will also see higher capacities later this month, ranging from 8GB to 32GB models and priced similarly to current memory stick modules. The higher performance is due in part to Sony’s new HX Engine flash memory controller that the company has been working on.
