Android Dominates Mobile OS Market

The OS war between different mobile operating system vendors is not new. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, RIM are some of the major contenders.

However, a study that was conducted recently states that Google dominates this pool of contenders with its Android OS. A research firm named Canalys recently carried out this survey which indicated that almost half of the world’s smartphones run Android while there is a major gap between iOS and Android. About 48 percent of the OS market belongs to Android while mere 19 percent is owned by iOS.

Apple Drags HTC To Court

In a latest development, Apple Inc. has sued HTC Corp. accusing the Taiwanese smartphone maker of infringing five of its patents. The patents relate to software architecture and user interfaces in portable electronic devices, hardware for touchscreens and movement sensors.

This marks Apple’s second lawsuit against HTC, and the hearing of the first lawsuit is scheduled for August 5, 2011. The first lawsuit pertained to certain personal data and mobile communications devices and related software.

Taiwan’s E-paper And What This Means For The Future

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute has developed e-paper technology which it expects to be used for digital signage. ITRI demonstrated prototypes of the e-paper (not pictured) that it hopes will be commercialized within the next two years.

The e-paper can print red, green, and blue in different parts of the paper and utilizes a roll-to-roll printing process that is currently used in newspaper presses. One example the ITRI demonstrated was an e-paper clock that refreshes electronically with each second. The research institute also noted other uses, such as e-wallpaper and e-tickets, which could be recycled and reprinted for hundred of events.
