Biggest Technology Myths

Ah, the world of tech myths! Despite countless efforts to kill them, a host of myths continue to persist. Some of them are result of plain ignorance while a few had genuine lineage but as the technology moves forward, do not hold true anymore. They are:

Four Reasons The iPhone 5 Will Dominate

Apple reinvented the mobile phone, and revolutionized the smartphone when it introduced the iPhone. It has been surpassed in overall market share by the Android OS, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is a worthy challenger as well, but this fall Apple has an opportunity to set the bar for the industry once again, and leave the competition in the dust with the iPhone 5.The following factors strongly support this thought:

Facebook Scam: Photographer Committed Suicide After Shooting Video

If you use Facebook, you might already be aware of the new scam going around that attempts to get you to click through it. The ad reads something like “Photographer committed SUICIDE 3 days after shooting THIS video!” and is followed by a link.

Of course, you can guess where the link leads to- a message that says “This really must have been an awkward moment” followed by a Share link that is written in the Finnish language.

Winklevoss Twins Finally Drop Suit Against Facebook

The Winklevoss twins have finally decided to drop their long legal case with Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg, and accept the earlier $65 million settlement. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name, Winklevoss, these twins supposedly gave Zuckerberg the ‘idea’ to create Facebook and felt that Zuckerberg stole their idea.

They have been going to court for over 7 years over Facebook, hoping to strike it rich and earn a much larger percentage of Facebook’s value. Thankfully, they have decided to drop their case and I hope, also drop their resentment towards Mark.

Check Facebook Through Excel-like Program At Work

If you enjoy checking up your latest Facebook updates, browsing your friends’ walls, or just goofing off here and there while you’re at work, you’re going to want to check this out. There’s now a program called Excell Book, a way to be on Facebook while making it look like you’re working (at least from a glance).

The software is designed by the apparel company, Diesel and works by useing Facebook Connect. With Excell Book open, users are able to update statuses, ‘like’ content, and even instant-message with friends through a seemingly harmless user interface.

Facebook Hoax Spreading Like Wildfire

Unfortunately, some people take advantage of hacking frenzies like the ones we’ve been facing, to create hoax threats and scares because they know that contextual cues will help the hoax be believable.

It doesn’t help that the media preys on fear of its viewers, because fear sells. People innately seek to be fearful of something because it has been beneficial to the survival of our ancestors, and thus, we carry the same trait.

Foursquare Hits 10 Million Users

LinkedIn India wasn’t the only group celebrating 10 million users. Foursquare also hit a 10 million user base on the same day. Whoa, talk about a coincidence. Foursquare celebrated by creating an interactive map, showing a series of colorful dots that had slowly spread around the globe.

Each one of those dots represented a user and the growth of the company, which has just passed its second birthday. Okay, so you may be thinking, who celebrates a 10 million user-base with a silly map?

FTC Approves Seven-Year Storage Of Social Media Data

The Federal Trade Commission approved background check companies to screen job applicants based on their Internet photos and postings. This means that any of your online activity, whether through Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc. is “free game” for background check companies and your future employer to check out.

Maybe you think that all it takes is a few deactivations, a click here, a click there, and you’re ready to apply for that new summer internship? Unfortunately for some, Social Intelligence Corporation (a background check company) can keep your postings for up to seven years.

Concept Zero-Emission Jet Achieving 3,125MPH

The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) has proposed a zero-emission Hypersonic Transportation aircraft that may turn flights into green-modes of transportation. The concept jet runs on a biofuel, seaweed, and will be able to achieve speeds above the atmoshpere, at 3,125 miles per hour.

The Zero Emission High Speed Transport (ZEHST) will make the current Concorde obsolete, and best of all, won’t harm our Earth anymore than all the cars we have on the road, at present.

A Facebook Music Dashboard On The Way?

There are rumors that Facebook is working on a music “dashboard”, a tab in the home page that allows for music streaming services. Although I don’t know how this will fare against signing directly into Pandora, I do have to commend the social media platform for finding another way to keep users tuned in.

The music will be available in the aforementioned tab on the left-hand side of Facebook’s home page, leading to music-streaming services such as Spotify.
