Tilera on Tuesday had announced a new CPU with 100 processing cores, which the company aims to break the duopoly in the processing market, dominated by Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices). The new low-power 100-core TileGX 3100 chip was designed to handle large volumes of Internet transactions.

The chips operate at speeds between 1GHz and 1.5 GHz, drawing 48 watts of power. These chips are superior to Intel server chips because they can execute more transactions per cycle while using less power.

Solar Powered Prison Facilities Save $55M

In addition to educational programs for prisoners, California’s “Con College” will give an opportunity for prisoners to lower their carbon footprint. The CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) will be adding 23 megawatts of solar-generated power at five state prison facilities in Southern California. The CDCR has estimated that the solar projects will save taxpayers more than $55 million over the long term.

Google Spends Like No Tomorrow, Drops Another $100 Million On Wind Farm

Following two investments in solar technology, Larry Page is showing who’s boss in making a third investment since taking over the reigns as CEO. Google’s latest investment brings its total spending to just under $300 million dollars so far this year. Google will now be investing in a nearby state to Silicon Valley, Oregon. The high tech giant will be spending $100 million in the Shepherds Flat Wind Farm in Arlington, Oregon.

Google will be joining the project with Caithness Energy, General Electric, Tyr Energy, and Sumitomo Corporation of America. The wind farm is still under construction but is expected to be the largest wind farm in the world! One the project has been completed, the farm will produce 845 megawatts of energy, allowing power to be saved in 235,000 homes.
