Yelp, Should You Follow It?

Duncan Simester posted an interesting blog from the Harvard Business Review. Simester mentions a restaurant he created six years ago with two partners, a restaurant meant to be a grab-and-go food business for more expensive clients. Simester claims that Yelp started around the same time and while he originally saw the newly found website as a blessing (being able to receive feedback and improve), he noticed that some of the comments were quite harsh.

Groupon Found Guilty Of Writing Fake Yelp Reviews

In a Venture Level blog post today, Romil Patel, an entrepreneur discusses his experiences with running Groupon and LivingSocial deals. Overall, he experienced some shadiness going on with Groupon. Apparently a Groupon representative he worked with had asked him to create fake, positive Yelp reviews for his own business.

Yelp has been the “go to” place for many years. When I first started using the service four years ago, I would only check out restaurants that were a far distance from me, in effort to save myself from any disappointment. Since then, I have “evolved” to use Yelp to check out 90% or more of the businesses and restaurants I go to. I will admit that not all ratings were accurate, and have been duped a couple times into walking into bland American restaurants, but it’s a small price to pay for all the other times Yelp has been right.
